"Kom Khoisan kry terug jou land"

I finally got to see the "Afrikaaps" at the Tri Continental Human Rights Film Festival.

Afrikaaps started off as a play and Dylan was asked to document it. This was a learning curve for the director which made it very engaging for us as the audience because we were on this journey with him as he traced his roots and the origins of the Afrikaans language.

From what I understood the play is about coloureds reclaiming the Afrikaans language "Afrikaaps" is what they call it. Most of the people in the doccie talk about how they get looked down upon for not speaking proper Afrikaans and English. The play features coloured artists like Jitsvinger (rapper) and many more.

I thought it was very cool how they (coloureds) don’t want to apologetic of who they are and how they speak. I was on some awe ma se kinders! I must admit however, that I was one of the people who thought coloureds lack culture a lot has changed since then...

  1. It is a cool place. The words on the wall are dope. Maybe we'll hit up the festival if a certain, ahem, block party doesn't work out ;-)
